Oral Cancer Screenings
A Few Minutes That Could Make All the Difference
Oral cancer can develop in the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and throat — often without obvious symptoms in its early stages. It's not something most people think to check for, but it's something we never skip. Regular screenings give our team the opportunity to identify anything unusual before it has a chance to progress.
What We Look For During Your Screening
The screening is quick, painless, and performed right in the chair during your regular exam. Here's what our team checks:
- Visual tissue examination: We carefully inspect the soft tissues of your mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and roof and floor of the mouth.
- Throat and neck check: We look for any visible abnormalities around the throat and feel along the neck for unusual lumps or swelling.
- Color and texture changes: Red or white patches, sores that haven't healed, or unusual thickening of tissue are all flagged for closer evaluation.
- Lesion documentation: If anything looks concerning, we document it and discuss next steps with you — which may include a referral or a follow-up monitoring appointment.
- Risk factor review:We'll ask about tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and other lifestyle factors that may increase your risk.

- Persistent sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw and tongue
