Saving Teeth is Always the Goal

Extractions are always a last resort. We explore every option to preserve a natural tooth before recommending removal — but there are situations where keeping a severely damaged, infected, or impacted tooth does more harm than good. When that point is reached, a timely extraction protects your surrounding teeth, your gums, and your overall oral health.

When is a Tooth Extraction Necessary

Our team will always explore every option to preserve your natural tooth first. In some situations, however, extraction is the most appropriate path forward:

  • Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth structure to support a filling or crown
  • Advanced gum disease that has caused the tooth to loosen from the supporting bone
  • A cracked or fractured tooth that extends below the gumline and cannot be restored
  • An impacted wisdom tooth causing pain, crowding, or recurring infection
  • Overcrowding that needs to be addressed prior to orthodontic treatment
  • A tooth that is causing or at risk of spreading infection to surrounding teeth or tissue
  • A failed root canal or a tooth that has not responded to prior treatment

What the Extraction Process Looks Like

Our goal is to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here's what the experience typically involves:

  • Thorough evaluation — We review X-rays and examine the tooth and surrounding tissue to confirm that extraction is the appropriate course of action.
  • Anesthesia — The area is fully numbed before we begin, so you feel pressure but not pain during the procedure.
  • Simple or surgical extraction — Straightforward cases involve loosening and removing the tooth directly. Impacted or broken teeth may require a minor surgical approach.
  • Socket care — Once the tooth is removed, we carefully clean the site and place gauze to support clot formation and initial healing.
  • Aftercare instructions — Before you leave, we'll walk you through exactly how to care for the extraction site at home to support a smooth recovery.

If appropriate, we'll talk through your options for replacing the tooth, such as a dental implant or bridge to restore function and prevent shifting.

FAQs

The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the extraction — only pressure and movement as the tooth is loosened and removed. Any discomfort experienced after the anesthesia wears off is typically manageable with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication, and it generally subsides within a few days.
